Celebrating 40 Years of the Rugged Toyota 4Runner
Since 1983, the Toyota 4Runner has been handling pavement and trails with joy. The midsize SUV has one of the largest cargo areas in its class, and it has plenty of room with standard seating for five and optional third-row seating for two more passengers.
Toyota offers the 4Runner with its capable 4.0-liter V6 engine and plenty of safety and technology features. After 40 years of production, Toyota is releasing a 40th Anniversary Special Edition trim with bronze-colored wheels, striped exterior trim, and celebratory badging.
High-Tech Safety Features
Toyota outfits the 4Runner with the Toyota Safety Sense suite of driver-assistance features. The Toyota 4Runner safety features include Forward Collision Warning, Forward Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Monitoring, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Adaptive Cruise Control, Automatic High-Beam Headlights, and a Rearview Camera.
These features are standard on the base SR5 trim. Drivers who choose the TRD Sport can choose an optional Surround-View Parking Camera System. The 4Runner Limited has the Toyota Safety Sense suite with Front and Rear Parking Sensors.
Innovative Interior and Performance Technology
Toyota offers the 4Runner in several trim levels, with a variety of technology features. The entry-level SR5 has an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexas, Bluetooth, SiriusXM Satellite Radio, a Wi-Fi hotspot, voice recognition, several USB ports, and an eight-speaker stereo.
The entry-level trim also comes with Service Connect and Safety Connect for maintenance updates, vehicle health reports, Emergency Assistance, Roadside Assistance, and Automatic Collision Notification. Remote Connect and Wi-Fi Connect are offered on several trims.
Toyota 4Runner technology in the SR5 Premium trim includes the same infotainment features with an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a universal garage door opener, and navigation.
The 4Runner has impressive off-road technology, especially on the TRD trims. The TRD Off-Road has a locking rear differential, crawl control, and multi-terrain modes. A Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System is available on this trim. Upgrading to the Off-Road Premium adds a multiview terrain monitor.
Near the top of the trim levels is the Limited which includes luxurious features like genuine leather upholstery with heated and ventilated seats and dual-zone automatic climate controls. Toyota also includes a 15-speaker JBL audio system.
