Full-Size Pickup with a Comfortable Ride

Toyota redesigned the Tundra in 2022 with two powertrain options with new interior features and a rugged exterior design. Like the previous generation, the 2023 Tundra has respectable towing and payload capacity thanks to the upgraded suspension with a refined rear suspension with coil springs.

Two Available Powertrains

While many automakers build their full-size pickup trucks with a standard V8, the Toyota Tundra differentiates itself with a standard V6. The i-FORCE twin-turbo V6 delivers 389 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. This engine comes standard with rear-wheel drive, but some trims offer available four-wheel drive. All trim levels come with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

The other 2023 Toyota Tundra engine is the i-FORCE MAX 3.5-liter V6 paired with an electric motor to deliver 437 horsepower and 583 lb-ft of torque. The mild-hybrid system transitions smoothly from the electric motor to the combustion motor, and it’s impressively quick off the line. The EPA-estimated fuel rating for the mild-hybrid is 20/24 MPG, while the twin-turbo V6 gets an EPA-estimated fuel economy rating of 18/20 MPG.

Towing and Payload Capacity

The Toyota Tundra full-size pickup truck has an impressive towing capacity. The maximum is 12,000 pounds when the truck is properly equipped and configured with a Double Cab, a 6.5-foot bed, and rear-wheel drive. The Toyota Tundra SR trim has the best towing capacity. The Tundra Tow Package has tow mirrors, a wiring harness with a 7-pin connector, a class IV towing with a 7-pin connector, TOW/HAUL driving modes, load-leveling rear height control air suspension, Crawl Control, and Downhill Assist Control. The minimum towing capacity in a Tundra is 8,300 pounds.

The Tundra has a maximum payload of 1,860 pounds, and at a minimum, the Tundra can manage 1,575 pounds. The TRD Pro has the lowest ratings for towing and payload but it’s the best Tundra model for off-roading with its off-road suspension, Fox shocks, crawl control, and locking rear differential.

Drivers who need a Tundra for towing should choose a model with rear-wheel drive and the non-hybrid engine. The hybrid powertrain reduces the towing capacity by a few hundred pounds. The larger CrewMax models do not tow as much as the Double Cab models.
